as a graphic designer i tend toward clean, simple solutions to the design problem presented. i like simplicity. ideally, i like all elements of the design to be there for a real reason…not just because it looks cool. of course, i don’t always achieve those standards, but in my truest design, i want there to be purpose.

the front and back pages of a newsletter mailer for the garden spot (a lovely place i worked while in school). i enjoyed trying to create a newsletter that would appeal to the divergent customer base of this nursery since their business appeals to young, new gardeners as well as the long, established elderly gardening population
_______

a layout for atrium, a hypothetical architectural magazine. the big challenge for myself was finding a way to create interaction with the type that suggested architecture, but was still fun and eye catching. (p.s. the blues weren’t quite that teal out of wordpress!)
_______

one of my favorite poster projects for boundary bay brewery…and one of my most popular (based on feedback from customers!). i think it shows how effective simplicity can be!

these are two spreads from a school project requiring a 2 color spot job for an informational booklet/mailer for nsai – the northwest summer arts institute. i chose yellowish/orange and black for the spot colors. partly to subvert the expected choices of blue and green or green and brown to suggest the northwest. but also to convey sun and summer while still allowing me to utilize my own black and white photography within the booklet.

we brew our own rootbeer at boundary bay brewery…a fact that gets overlooked in the face of our very popular beers. so, to draw attention to the fact that we’ve been brewing (and winning awards for) our own rootbeer, i created a kids t-shirt for the brewery. boundary bay (the geographical spot – not the brewery!) is a shorebird reserve and is an important stop for birds migrating along the pacific flyway. i wanted to honor that history as well as give a nod to my all-time favorite kid’s book: james and the giant peach! this piece was also a lot of fun for me because it was a great chance to combine hand drawn elements (the birds) with vector illustration and photoshop painting.
_______

another school project utilizing vector illustrations to create signage for an existing zoo. these illustrations were created with simple vector shapes layered on top of each other…no blending modes or opacity were allowed. this was a good challenge for me to take the concepts of shading from my figure drawing classes and utilize them in a digital setting.
